What it actually is

Real archaeogenetic samples. Real archaeology.

The Ancient DNA report compares your genome against the growing public corpus of archaeogenetic samples — DNA recovered from skeletal remains at named archaeological digs. Reich Lab releases, Allentoft, Mathieson, Lazaridis, and others, deduplicated and curated.

Where Modern says "you look like a Lebanese Maronite," Ancient says "you carry signal from Roman Latium / Imperial Era and Pannonian Gauls / Iron Age." Same upload, completely different lens.

For each ancient population we identify in your file, you get historical context — who they were, when they lived, where they were dug up, what we know about them. Bronze Age, Iron Age, Late Antiquity, Imperial Era. Real eras, real names, real history.

How it actually works

Four steps from upload to civilizations.

01

Same upload as Modern

If you've already paid for Modern, the Ancient report reads from the file already on your account. No re-upload.

02

Model against archaeogenetic samples

Reich Lab releases, Allentoft, Mathieson, Lazaridis — deduplicated, curated, modelled.

03

Best-fit ancient mixtures

Best-fit population mixtures ranked by genetic distance with named civilization labels and date ranges.

04

Historical context per population

Each population gets era, location, dig site, cultural context — not a chart, an interpretation.

What's in the report

The deliverable, in detail.

Real archaeogenetic data

Not modern populations relabelled. Actual DNA recovered from named dig sites in peer-reviewed publications.

Time-depth context

Eras, dates, civilizations with names, not abstract genetic clusters.

Pairs with Modern

The deep-time companion that explains where each modern population in your Modern report came from originally.

Historical narrative per population

Who they were, when they lived, where they were dug up, what we know about them.

Lifetime access

Same as Modern — always available on your dashboard. Buy once, keep forever.

Continuously curated panel

New archaeogenetic releases get added to the panel; future buyers see the most current sample set.

Why this report

What the modern view alone can't tell you.

/ 01

Time depth

Modern populations are recent endpoints of long migration histories. Ancient samples reveal where those endpoints came from.

/ 02

Real archaeology

Bohemian Gauls, Roman Latium, Pannonian Iron Age — these are excavation sites, dated, peer-reviewed, attributable.

/ 03

Cheap to add to Modern

€10.60 on top of Modern's €21.20 — and the same upload feeds both. Together you get past + present.

A real sample

This is what the deliverable looks like.

The Ancient report is a multi-section interactive on-platform report. What you see below is a real shipped result.

Common questions

Before you buy.

Do I need to buy Modern first?
No. Ancient stands alone. But the same upload feeds both — if you buy Modern + Ancient together, you don't re-upload. And the two reports complement each other strongly: Modern tells you who you look like today, Ancient tells you where those modern populations came from.
Are these really "ancient" samples or just modern populations?
Real archaeogenetic samples — DNA recovered from skeletal remains at named archaeological digs and published in peer-reviewed genomic releases (Reich Lab, Allentoft, Mathieson, Lazaridis et al.). The corpus is curated and deduplicated. Each result population is traceable to its original publications.
What time depth are we talking about?
The current panel covers roughly 6,000 years of European, MENA, and Eurasian archaeogenetic samples. Bronze Age through Late Antiquity, with some earlier Mesolithic / Neolithic samples included where the published corpus supports them.
Will my result name specific dig sites?
Where the data supports it, yes. "Roman Latium / Imperial Era," "Greco-Roman Emporiae · Hispania," "Anatolian Turkish peoples of Bursa (Bronze Age)" — these are the kinds of labels you'll see when the signal is strong enough.
How long does it take?
Around 24 hours, same as Modern. If you bought Modern first and add Ancient later, the second report is even faster because the upload is already on your account.
